The Coalición de Comunidades Indigenas de Oaxaca (COCIO) presented the 19th Annual Guelaguetza festival at California State University at San Marcos (CSUSM) this month, in partnership with the university’s Department of Anthropology. COCIO’s mission is to encourage indigenous cultural practices in the Americas. Guelaguetza celebrates folkloric traditions from the seven regions of Oaxaca, Mexico, and draws its roots from a cultural festival dating to the fifteenth century. This year’s festival featured Oaxacan dance groups and musicians, traditional foods and candies, and arts and crafts. COCIO members, CSUSM students, and the general public came together to celebrate the Oaxacan cultural legacy and helped the campus come alive with a rainbow of clothing and art.
