Young 92078 resident Sofia Hashemi-Asai recently tied for first place at the San Diego Youth Symphony and Conservatory’s (SDYS) advanced Concerto Competition. Sofia was one of nine finalists admitted to the competition and one of only two to win a Soloist Award. She now has the opportunity to perform her winning piece, Concerto No. 4 on the violin, at either the Jan. 18 Artist Series Concert at California Center for the Arts or the Winter Ovation Concert at Copley Symphony Hall. Sofia is a junior in high school and has played the violin since she was 5 years old. She has previously won the California Young Artists Competition MusicFest and San Diego’s MTAC-VOCE Competition and has performed in Portugal and Austria as well as locally in duos, quintets, and chamber groups. Currently she serves as associate concertmaster of SDYS’s Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra. The Concerto Competition Awards are sponsored by Pat Baker and Larry Norquist.
