SMHS Graduate Recognized for Teamwork and Dedication

San Marcos High School graduate Angel Gonzalez has been named the recipient of the 2016 CVS Student Award of Excellence. Each year the CVS Health Workforce Initiatives program selects one student from each of the five WorkAbility 1 regions in California to receive the award in recognition of their participation in a work experience opportunity at a CVS Health store. This is the fourth consecutive year that a student from San Marcos Unified School District’s WorkAbility 1 Region V program has won this award.

Angel worked at a CVS Health store during the spring semester of his senior year. He received a perfect evaluation at the conclusion of his work experience and the store manager Lou Rugari encouraged him to apply for a permanent position when he graduated. Angel was hired in the fall of 2015 and has worked at the store full-time since then. Lou saw great potential for Angel and began to train him for a supervisory position. When a position became available for Angel at another location, Lou encouraged him to accept the position and make a transfer, which he did.

Through California’s WorkAbility 1 program initiative, numerous students throughout the state have started out on a path to a better and more productive adult life. CVS Health is the WorkAbility program’s largest business partner in San Marcos and provides work experience opportunities for students at all five of their San Marcos stores. Angel credits the WorkAbility program and CVS Health with providing valuable work experience and training and assisting him in gaining confidence and maturity as he learned how to provide excellent customer service and work with his manager, supervisors, and peers.
