Teach, Lead, Grow

For the last three years, Tyler Garns has been volunteering with Boy Scout Troop 609 based in San Elijo Hills. But Tyler’s scouting days go back to his own childhood when he was a scout himself. Today, Tyler is passing on these same values and responsibilities to his three young sons.

“What many people don’t realize is that the Boy Scouts has far less to do with woodcarving and camping and a lot more to do with developing leaders and serviceminded community members,” Tyler shared. “All of the outdoor experiences are designed to get the young men outside of their normal environment so they let their guard down and have opportunities to teach, lead, and grow.”

These “weekly wins” add up over time, and Tyler greatly appreciates the impact of the scouting lessons in the boys’ future successes.

Part of Tyler’s service to Troop 609 includes helping with the annual 5k fundraiser race in San Elijo. The money raised supports the cost of the scouts’ summer camp. The race is held in May and growing in popularity; entries doubled this year from last. Tyler shared that volunteers are always needed for the 5k race.

Outside of his scouting life, Tyler owns a marketing agency in Carlsbad. Husband and father of four (three sons and a daughter), Tyler and his family enjoy the San Elijo Hills community, the people, and the ocean view. He also appreciates the local trails. “I don’t run or ride as much as I’d like to, but when I get out on the trails, I realize how beautiful our area is,” he said.
