Hypertension – What You Need to Know
Awareness is key
High blood pressure, also called hypertension, affects nearly half of American adults. Because high blood pressure has no symptoms, many aren’t aware they have it! In fact, it’s often referred to as “the silent killer” because, left untreated, it can lead to serious complications such as heart attack, stroke, or congestive heart failure.
Blood pressure is the force of your blood pushing against the walls of your arteries. Last year, the American Heart Association, American College of Cardiology, and several other major health organizations released new guidelines for prevention, diagnosis and treatment of high blood pressure. See the table below:
Managing high blood pressure
Your Primary Care doctor can determine whether you have high blood pressure and develop a plan to help you manage it, including healthy lifestyle changes, home monitoring, and perhaps, medication.
If you have high blood pressure, remember that you’re not alone! By working with your health care provider and making healthy lifestyle choices, you can manage this condition and lower your risk of complications.
